[science-cubed-adventure] An 8th grader who loves StarTrails comics-to-movies-to-forums
has won their summer fun contest to ride with the regular astronauts six weeks at NASA's
Deep-Space Simulator Training Facility... But she's virtually over-qualified and gets
the first-captain's chair, and it looks all too real for a simulation: They launch a
full-scale mission from Earth to Neptune, routine until she learns the real purpose for
the mission is to rendezvous with a newly-discovered near-solar-system-object, and must
cope with the consequences of trying their best among gravity-singularities and stray
atmospheres, and whatever planets are way out there at the edge....
The concept is that StarTrails is both the reality of her favorite science-fiction story
and, NASA's next big push for the edge.

The Game itself is a seven-player
simulator-trainor for tomorrows' deep-space astronauts to help NASA look ahead: In
the 1960's America went to the moon, and developed nuclear-powered space engines
with the thrust equivalent of the Space Shuttle's main-three running non-stop, for
going to Mars and beyond... but nuclear power was deemed unclean, unsafe and unsane,
'til now (Zr-96, Ni-58)-- it's time to return
to immanent domain, power, and glory....
This movie may be done in 3D-HDDV/3DDV, (Or for theatric effect, shot-on-location
e.g. outer-space, in electronic ultra-resolution large-format 3DD-IMAX, 70mm-eqv.
1.78, e-cinerama 2.67, or e-imax 1.19), And shall be available digitally-recorded
wide-screen stereo'eyes'ed on HD-Disk and tape. The initial shoot shall be to
terastore harddrive, dual-4-megapixels/frame, wavelet-compressed, The digitized-sound
and music edited in synchronized frame fractions of a second, and hardcopy saved,
And the final product released on 3D-HDDV disk (now standard): The advantage of
digital is its reproducibility for the future of both movie-house and, broadcast
(commonplace as of ca-2010).... Image generation shall be further enhanced and
assisted by state-of-the-art computer facility, The final result shall be viewable
stereo-eyes-ed '3.5D' with white 'sexichrome' or,
super-polarized (cosine-squared), safety-goggles... and HDDV-HDTV and standard 35mm
film (telecined celluloid) as well as home-theater DVD....

Mr. Raymond Kenneth Petry, independent research scientist, is the author of

A scholarly eighth grader spends summer with NASA's astronauts in the Deep
Space Simulator Training Facility preparing for next decade's mission to Neptune and
becomes apprised of the truth that really fires NASA. 191 pg. Sci³fi adventure. PG-13.
SYNOPSIS: "START RAILS"
Part 1. Ready to go: [est. 54 min.]
First a sample of comicbook starship 'maleness' its computer is 'dreaming' of chasing a gaggle of young women in flowing robes along a forest cliff ledge, its Captain and crew are frantic to determine how Navigation has bypassed its Logic Comprehension Unit, And Mikee turns the pages... Mother calls her down to lunch and p-mail and she learns she's been selected winner to spend summer, training with NASA astronauts in the Deep-Space Mission simulator, after she takes the vid-call from Grandma, and vid-calls her school friends to discuss summer plans.... The day comes and she's off by airplane and reads another episode of her favorite sci-fi comics 'To Boldly Go', and the plane lands in Houston in the evening.... Next morning early she arrives at NASA, crossing paths with the turnlane newsboy, and preps with the regular crew and former-first captain who's now her second-in-command because she's outscored him on the written tests (and ultimately she must prove herself worthy), attending a series of special lectures training for nuclear-powered interplanetary missions....
Part 2. The virtual mission: [est. 50 min.]
Before launch, an administrator explains to her the importance of including children on deep-space-missions, to acquire outer-space proficiency; then a peptalk encounter-session and they ride out to the underground desert simulator launch-silo for two months... And once inside, Mikee forgets the outside world: this spaceship is a self-contained multi-level virtual-reality vessel and there's nothing in this 'simulator' to suggest they aren't really launching into deep space from-liftoff-to-landing with exterior visuals: the crew sequences-up, and liftoff on the nuclear-booster for a 2-g climb to space (Clean Nuclear by-the-way).... The second-captain commands the gravity-swing-boost acceleration around the moon, after Mikee gives her sci-fi angle.... They pass Mars, drop interplanetary spacework science-probes along the way, while Mikee enjoys her e-mail communications with her earth friends at summer camp, then Jupiter while she reviews an uplink-download of a comic episode of 'Lonestone's Twin' until she must get to work with her first top-secret-code 'black' operation, Then onward out of the solar system,--
Part 3. The real mission: [est. 56 min.]
In the garden deck Mikee reads a late e-mail prerecorded by NASA Admin and learns the real purpose for this mission is to locate an obscure cosmic object 'Rogue Hole' nearing our solar system: they are nearer than Earth can see (a real 1974 discovery unsolved), but she runs them too close to a challenging gravity singularity which flings them off course until towards a tenuous gas planet where Mikee rescues their heading, making first-contact with a hitherto-unknown space-alien community at the solar-system fringe 'watering hole' city-planet....
Part 4. Homeward bound: [est. 31 min.]
And on the ride back to the inner solar system for Earth home, we catch a few interesting details of shipboard life, how to flip the ship, Mikee's Swim-U-Lator exercize machine, a dodge through the asteroids belt, the 3-g deceleration over the moonscape, Mikee's sci-fi-special maneuvre, and fast coast to Earth for an early evening landing: on the right day.... Nearing Earth she gets a surprise NASA-first: a DVDJ debriefs the NASA spaceling musically while the ship returns to the launch silo.... It powers down, they exit with a last-look, and take a van back to the NASA buildings while Mikee looks back at the silo ground and notes a slight difference-- sands blown around the silo ground are different: it has been opened and reclosed and maybe it was not all virtual-- maybe it was really real.... Admin congratulates her and she leaves with Mom and Dad and their new, real car-- riding into the sunset as the credits scroll to a little theme-like music about the new century....
